چکیده

A three-dimensional, size-resolved and chemically resolved aerosol model is developed. Gas-to-particle conversion is represented by dynamic mass transfer between the gas and aerosol phases. Particle-phase thermodynamics is computed by a new thermodynamic model, Simulating Composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium 2. The aerosol model is applied to simulate gas and aerosol behavior in the August 27-29, 1987, episode in the South Coast Air Basin of California. The assumption that volatile inorganic species uch as NH4NO3 are at instantaneous, local equilibrium is examined.

A modeling study of size- and chemically resolved aerosol thermodynamics in a global chemical transport model

[1] Chemically and size-resolved aerosol mass size distributions are simulated online using the Intermediate Model of Global Evolution of Species (IMAGES). Aerosol-phase thermodynamics is coupled to this chemical transport model using the Simulating Composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium (SCAPE2) module. Emphasis is placed on the equilibrium concentrations of aerosol ammonium, nitr...

The effects of aircraft on climate and pollution. Part I: Numerical methods for treating the subgrid evolution of discrete size- and composition-resolved contrails from all commercial flights worldwide

This paper provides and evaluates mass conservative, positive-definite, unconditionallystable, and non-iterative numerical techniques for simulating the evolution of discrete, sizeand composition-resolved aerosol and contrail particles in individual aircraft exhaust plumes in a global or regional 3-D atmospheric model and coupling the subgrid exhaust plume information to the grid scale. Such tr...

Development and initial evaluation of a dynamic species-resolved model for gas phase chemistry and size-resolved gas/particle partitioning associated with secondary organic aerosol formation

[1] A module for predicting the dynamic evolution of the gas phase species and the aerosol size and composition distribution during formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is presented. The module is based on the inorganic gas-aerosol equilibrium model Simulating the Composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium 2 (SCAPE2) and updated versions of the lumped Caltech Atmospheric Chemis...

Weighted Flow Algorithms (WFA) for stochastic particle coagulation

Stochastic particle-resolved methods are a useful way to compute the time evolution of the multi-dimensional size distribution of atmospheric aerosol particles. An effective approach to improve the efficiency of such models is the use of weighted computational particles. Here we introduce particle weighting functions that are power laws in particle size to the recently-developed particle-resolv...

Three-dimensional factorization of size-resolved organic aerosol mass spectra from Mexico City

A size-resolved submicron organic aerosol composition dataset from a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) collected in Mexico City during the MILAGRO campaign in March 2006 is analyzed using 3-dimensional (3-D) factorization models. A method for estimating the precision of the size-resolved composition data for use with the factorization models is presented here for the...
